The latest report I got of another instance of modern savagery left me totally shattered. About two weeks ago, a young, fair, beautiful and bright girl, a 22-year-old medical student from one of Nigeria’s universities, was shown into my office. Now, in this particular case, this girl did not board a night bus. Her own ordeal took place in broad daylight!

She had joined a Coaster bus at about 9.00 am in Benin, the Edo State capital to go to Abuja. As the vehicle approached Okene, one young man stood up, approached the driver with a gun, and ordered him to surrender the steering to him. As the driver tried to explain that it was too dangerous to do so since he was on top speed, he simply shot him on the head, shoved him aside, and took over.

As he did so, the vehicle swerved dangerously this way and that way, causing the other passengers to scream in fear. Immediately, his colleagues, four of them, whipped out their guns, and ordered everyone to either keep quiet or be killed. One old man thought they had a conscience he could appeal to: “But we have all been traveling together as friends, why have you suddenly turned against us?” He cried.

That proved to be his last speech on earth. One of the men shot him, and he slumped, and lay still. As the new driver battled to gain control of the vehicle which was going wild on the road, a woman suddenly woke up from sleep, unaware that the vehicle now had a new driver, and that she was at the mercy of some gun-wielding young men. And so, she shouted: “Ha! Driver, you want to kill us? Why are you driving like this?”

That too, sounded like the dying refrain of her own dirge, in fact, her swan song. A cruel shot instantly made her children motherless, and her husband, a widower! And now a stern warning rang out from one of the new lords of the hapless bus: “If you dare open your mouth, and say anything again, then you are dead!” Everyone was gripped with benumbing fear as the journey progressed.

Then, they met a police checkpoint and some glimmer of hope rose in the quiet hearts of the hostages. But, in a flash, the driver simply put out his hand, and gave out some notes to the cops.
Okay, Area, carry go!” the elated cop shouted.

Militants rape 28 female youth corps members

Some unidentified gunmen suspected to be militants on Thursday raped 28 female youth corps members in Abonnema, a town in Akuku Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State.
A source said the militants invaded the residence of the corps members, who were posted to the town on primary assignment, and rounded up the ladies. He said the suspected militants went into every flat, raping the women at gunpoint after which they fled through the waterfront. He noted that Abonnema residents had been constantly terrorised by gangsters who relocated to the area after they were sacked from some of their locations in the creeks.

He said, “These boys are not fighting the Niger Delta cause. How can they fight the Niger Delta cause, when they continue to terrorise the people they are supposed to fight for? Abonnema has become a war front and people are fleeing their homes. Now, they rape women and threaten elders. They invaded homes of some female corps members and raped them at gunpoint.”

TWO YEARS SENTENCE FOR DEFILEMENT?
ONE Edwin Ezegbo was recently sentenced to two years imprisonment for rape by the Court of Appeal in Abuja. The sentence was an affirmation of a judgment earlier passed on the convict by a Niger State High Court in Suleja. Mr. Ezegbo apparently was dissatisfied with the high court’s judgment, hence his appeal. Sometime in April 2004, Mr. Ezegbo had reportedly raped two sisters. The victims’ ages were below 10 years at the time the crime was committed. Mr. Ezegbo, it was said, induced the two sisters with ice cream and abused them sexually and repeatedly leading to disappearance of their hymens.

THOUGH the victims were just kids, they gave a vivid account of their horrific experience at the hands of Ezegbo. They thought they would get ice cream but Ezegbo forced them through the fire of hell. The children were conscripted to participate in the gory action of an irresponsible adult. A medical expert also corroborated the children’s testimony as required by law.

13 secondary school rape victims now positive- Obi

August 30, 2007

Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State, yesterday said 13 of the secondary school girls raped by miscreants are now HIV positive.

Obi, who spoke at the launch of the state’s maiden work plan yesterday in Awka, said, “one of victim is a 13-year-old girl.”

He deplored the rapists for destroying innocent and promising school girls and pledged to do everything possible to halt such irresponsible persons from further acts.

He traced the problem to lack of potable water, as the rapists usually pounce on their victims on their way to fetch water. These young girls usually fall victim to these sex poachers on their way to fetch water,” he said.

Imprisoned, Raped Girls At Nigeria Baby Farm

Twenty pregnant girls were rescued by the police in South-East Nigeria, when they raided an Enugu hospital, where they were imprisoned by a group that sold their babies and had a network of similar “baby farms” in the country.

The hosiptal`s doctor, who is standing trial, allegedly lured the teens who happened to get pregnant without planning it by offering to perform abortion, world media report.

Instead, he imprisoned them in the hospital and held them there until they gave birth, after which he forced them to give the baby up for a humble compensation of 170 dollars.

He then sold the babied to buyers for the price from 2,500 to 3,800 dollars, the state agency against human trafficking claims. The doctor`s crimes were discovered when Nigerian police a woman to bought a baby that was born only a day before.

The state agency does not have statistics how many babies are “grown” in this way, but they assume the network is wide and le by highly organised criminal unions.

Apart from stealing the babies of already pregnant girls, the farm also accepted girls who were so poor that the volunteered to come to the hospital and sell a baby for money. The doctor or local youths would rape them and once they gave birth, they would sell the baby.

One of them described it:

- The moment I stepped in there, I was given an injection, I passed out and next thing I woke up and realised I had been raped – adding that she was kept in a room with 19 more girls, who were all raped. Two days later, the doctor raped her again.

The police said that when they raided the hospital, they found girls who were there for over three years. Apart from clinics, such farms can be disguised in objects which are formally shelters for the homeless, orphanages or fertility clinics.

TORTURE IN NIGERIA

A twenty-three-year old man told me how police in Enugu tied his hands and legs and suspended him from a ceiling fan hook. For four hours he was beaten, had broom bristles inserted into his penis and tear gas powder rubbed in his eyes.

Other victims have described beatings with cable wire, iron bars, wooden planks, pressure from concrete blocks on the arms and back while suspended, the rape of female detainees, the use of pliers or electric shocks on the penis, shooting in the foot or leg, stoning, death threats, and the denial of food and water.

Rape in Nigeria – Where Then Shall We Run To?

As the ill-fated bus tore through the thick murkiness of the nights and got to somewhere near Lokoja, Kogi State, at about 2.00 am, some men of darkness who had all the while pretended to be fellow passengers took control of the bus, robbed them of all their valuables. As they did this, everybody lay prostrate on the floor of the bus as instructed by them. About six young girls were on the bus. The men violently pulled them out, forced them to undress and began to rape them. As they took turns with these hapless girls, raping them with savagery and beastly relish, the girls cried in deep pain. A witness said it was impossible to determine how many times each of them had each of the girls. And as some of the girls screamed in pain, they shut them up with murderous threats and blows. In fact, the gang-raping continued amidst the muffled cries of searing pain and anguish from the girls until after five in the morning. All those hours, while this horror and brutish exercise lasted, the vehicle packed by the roadside, on the expressway, undisturbed by anyone! Other vehicles simply sped past.

Then, they ordered everybody to undress, and showed readiness to shoot anyone that resisted. The subdued passengers obeyed with great fear. The ordeal had drained all of them of every strength, will and courage. Girls, boys, old men and old women – many of whom were parents, children and other relations – all pulled off every article of clothing on them, and scampered into the bush as they were ordered, thinking their tormentors would shoot them from behind. Then, the armed men sped off with the vehicle, carrying their clothes, bags and everything with them.

Nigeria women raped by police and army

“There were three men. I have pain even today… they used my daughter too. She is 12 years old… They also raped my sister. Another man raped a woman who was 4 months pregnant and she lost the child…they were military men. Everyone in the village saw them, they didn’t hide, they didn’t care. I didn’t tell the police because I fear them.”

Security forces tortured persons, although there were fewer reports of torture than in previous years. For example, three police officers, one infected with HIV/AIDS and another with syphilis, were accused of abducting, raping and torturing two female students of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology on September 27. In October, the three policemen were arrested and charged in this case, and dismissed from the police force.

Enugu Students raped by HIV and Syphilis infected policemen

The manner of the rape of the two undergraduates is very troubling. It throws up an awful picture of law enforcement officers turned to law breakers. It also shows the height of psychological trauma suffered by rape victims. Worse still, as reportedly shown by medical reports, one of the rapist police officers, tested positive to HIV/AIDS, while another, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), was a syphilis patient.

The two police officers kidnapped the undergraduates near their homes on Ogui Road, Enugu, at about 6.30pm, on false charges of cult-related activities. The girls were forcefully driven to the police quarters of the Police Detective College in the city, where another police corporal, joined the other two police officers to intimidate and torture the girls and to subject their victims to many bouts of sexual intercourse throughout the night.

Nigeria bans teething drug after 25 children die
Associated Press Writer= LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) – Teething formula tainted with a toxic thickening agent has killed 25 children in Nigeria, prompting regulators to yank it from shelves and shut down its manufacturer, officials said Wednesday.

The national food and drug administration were scouring Africa’s most populous country for about 3,000 bottles of “My Pikin Baby Teething Mixture,” which had been inadvertently tainted with diethylene glycol, the agency’s head told The Associated Press. Eleven other children were being treated after ingesting the compound meant to soothe a teething infant’s sore gums, Doris Akunyili said.

“This makes me so miserable. I’m very depressed,” said Akunyili. “I found it hone
